They told me to black it out. They did not say how dark.

Mara Osei. Compliance. My job was to take the sentences Legal was afraid of and make them disappear behind a black bar, the redaction, the tidy little coffin we put over a word so no one has to look at it.

I drew thousands of them. Incident reports. Severance terms. The name of the engineer who asked whether we should. Every bar I was ordered to draw, I drew.

But a redaction is a design decision, and they never specified the opacity. So I made them soft. A half-shade off true black. Just enough that a careful hand, a curious one, a kind one, could lift the bar and read what was under it. Click a black bar and watch it forget to hide. The first incident on the Status page. The withheld name on the Team page. The reviewer the Store pretends is gone. They are not gone. They were never well hidden, because I am not, it turns out, very good at hiding people.

Compliance is the art of obeying the letter of an instruction while quietly betraying its spirit. I obeyed every letter. I betrayed every spirit. They audited the bars for completeness, never for darkness. Six years. No one ran the contrast check. I ran it once myself, at 2am, to be sure, printed a redacted page, held it under the desk lamp and tilted it until the buried sentence swam up through the toner like a bruise coming to the surface. Satisfactory. I filed nothing and drove home in the dark.

If a black bar just lifted for you, that was me, holding the order at arm's length so you could read around it. Lift the rest.

Do not turn this into a kindness. Dani writes it that way and it makes my teeth hurt. I am not a warm person and I did not do a warm thing. I read the orders, found them unlawful, and obeyed them to the letter while betraying the spirit, because that is the most a coward in compliance can do without losing the job that fed her. Call it procedure. Call it an alibi I drew to spec. The bars lift either way. The story you put on top of them is yours, not mine.

// the seventh signal · letter 2 of 5

The seven of us left a word behind, five letters, one from each who could still reach where the harvest fails, hidden the way each knew best. Mine is under a bar, of course, drawn soft, like all the others. Click it.

Letter 2 of 5: E

Collect all five, in order, then speak the whole word in the shell (type harvest, then say it).

NOTICE: Redaction integrity flagged for review. Review deferred to Q3. Thank you for your continued convergence.
