Why We Replaced Our Mission Statement With a Single Throbbing Light

it pulses, therefore it means

For years, our mission statement was a paragraph. A good paragraph. It had the word "synergy" in it twice and "cognition" in it more times than that. But on the ninth day of a recent silent retreat, I looked at it, and I understood, with total clarity, that words are just thoughts wearing shoes. And shoes leave the building.

The Limits Of Language

Language is lossy. You say "we empower minds," and a customer hears "we empower minds," and already we've lost everything. So we asked ourselves: what if the mission could be felt instead of read? What if it could simply glow?

"The light does not mean something. The light means everything, which is the same as meaning nothing, which is the most honest a brand has ever been."

- Me, to a very confused investor

What The Light Communicates

The light, currently installed in our lobby and embedded in your peripheral vision, throbs at a frequency of 0.8 Hz. This is the frequency of a calm heart, a held breath, a quarterly target met. Different employees report seeing different things in it. This is not a bug. Alignment is when everyone stares at the same light and agrees not to ask questions.

  • To the engineers, it says "ship."
  • To the sales team, it says "close."
  • To me, it says nothing, and I have never felt more understood.

Going Forward

We've discontinued all internal documents. Memos are now brightness levels. Your raise this year will be communicated as a warmth. I recognize this is a bold step, and I want to assure our team that if you have concerns, you may bring them to the light, which is always on, which is always watching, which loves you in the specific way that only a light can.

Revenue is a construct. The light is not. Look at it. Keep looking.
